I have missed a dose of my progesterone-only pill
The progesterone-only pill contains a smaller dose of hormones and does not contain any oestrogen. The time window within which these pills need to be taken is smaller than that of the combined pill. It also differs depending on the specific progesterone-like hormone your pill contains.
Many mini-pills are only fully effective when taken within three hours of the correct time. Newer versions of the mini pill, such as Cerazette, however, are effective even when taken up to 12 hours late. Always check the information leaflet with your pill to make sure you’re taking it correctly .
If you remember to take the next pill within that time frame, you are still protected. You won’t need to use any additional contraceptive and you won’t need an emergency contraceptive.
If you have taken your mini pill more than 3 hours late (or 12 hours for Cerazette):
- Take the missed pill as soon as you remember.
- Continue with the next pill at the usual time (even if it means taking two pills on the same day or at the same time).
- Use additional contraception for the following 48 hours.
- If you have had unprotected sex during the past two days, you may need emergency contraception (for example a morning after pill).
