About Metronidazole Tablets

How are metronidazole tablets taken?

1-day course: you need to take 5 400mg metronidazole tablets together in 1 day as a single dose.

7-day course: you need to take metronidazole over a period of seven days. You will take one 400mg tablet twice a day.

Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water. You can take them with or after a meal. Your BV symptoms may improve within 2-3 days but it is important that you finish the whole course you have been prescribed.

You must not drink any alcohol while taking metronidazole tablets as it can interact with metronidazole and cause serious side effects. You should abstain from drinking alcohol for the entire duration of your treatment until two days after you have taken the last tablet.

Some women experience a recurrent bout of bacterial vaginosis several weeks after their treatment. If this happens, you may need to complete another course of treatment. If your symptoms return, speak to you doctor.

Who can take metronidazole tablets?

You must not take metronidazole tablets if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients. Tell your prescribing doctor if there is any antibiotic you are allergic to or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Metronidazole tablets are a prescription only medication and a doctor needs to review whether you can take them. You may not be able to take them if you suffer from a kidney or liver problem or if you suffer from a disease of the nervous system.

Please note: where a generic product has been ordered we may use a range of manufacturers to provide you with your medication, in order to maintain our service levels.
